TRD/ cat back exhaust (1 Viewer)

Ok so it took me 4 hours to install but that was a lot of time spent digging out my tools and figuring out how everything goes together. Also it is really a 2 man job but I managed it by myself.

I used 2 rhino ramps, 2 floor jacks on the frame for safety, 4 wheel chocks on the front wheels, 1 motorcycle jack to lift the new exhaust into place. You will need standard and deep 14mm sockets, and an assortment of extensions. There is one heat shield just behind the cat on the left side that will need to be removed, which is secured by two 12mm head bolts.

The studs and springs are reused behind the cat on the left. On the right, behind the cats, is an elbow that is about 8" long. It does not need to be removed. All other connections will use the new hardware provided. The thick seal in the hardware kit is for the connection between the center pipe and elbow. The larger diameter, thinner, seal is for the center pipe to rear pipe connection.

I do suggest washing both pipes with soap and water before installing to avoid the massive cloud of white smoke that @jclaffee mentioned. It is real and I got some really funny looks from people in traffic.

First impressions:
Wow. Its got a deep and low growl. No, its not a v8, but I find the sound quite pleasing. Obviously it's loud when the engine is under load accelerating or climbing a grade. Drone is minimal to me. Cruising the canyons at around 45mph at 1500rpm, the drone is hardly noticeable. It gets louder as you climb to 2000rpm. Then past 2000rpm I can imagine it getting a little old. I also had it on the highway at about 75 and felt the drone was minimal while cruising between 1500 and 2000rpm. Its there, but my wife and I were able to have a conversation without raising our voices and my hyper and anxious puppy was able to fall asleep. Keep in mind that this is all entirely subjective so YMMV.

Am I keeping it? Hell yes. Will be posting my stock exhaust for sale shortly for those that got the TRD from the port and want something quieter.

Standard parts, left. TRD, right. Elbow that I didn't need to remove, top center. Note that on stock exhaust and the MagnaFlow, the inlet pipes are joined before entering the muffler. On the TRD the pipes enter the muffler separately, which I expect would result in better flow. That is a win for the TRD in my book.

Put a few more miles on over the weekend and the stock exhaust is going back on next week. If anyone wants to buy a TRD exhaust with ~300 miles on it and can pick up in SW Colorado, it's yours for 50% of what I paid for it. PM me.

It's not that it sounds bad, it just doesn't fit what I want from this vehicle. I've had a lot of loud, proud vehicles over the years and I've decided that I'm cool with this one being more stealthy. And my wife says she agrees :)

(Mods please delete this if inappopriate)

We've had the TRD cat-back and NYTOP axle-back on our car and I can objectively say the NYTOP is almost stock sounding. The TRD is much louder and deeper relative to the stock and NYTOP. It's still far from loud. You can't even hear it in certain conditions (light throttle on the interstate). I thought it was made from mild steel when we first got it, but I got confirmation from Lexus that it's some form of stainless steel. We've had it on the car through the Indiana winter (and salt) and at least 20 car washes. It's looks like the day we put it on. Speaking of the day we put it on, I did it by myself while it was on an AWD dyno (Fathouse Performance). No lift. Just slid under the car. We wanted to see if there was in improvement, but we ended up losing power with each run. The cars computer was not happy and kept pulling timing. We never figured out how to overcome that, so no power figures until we do.

The NYTOP is insanely light (titanium) and looks incredible. It's tucked away for maximum ground clearance.

We ordered a MagnaFlow 3 months ago, to do a side-by-side comparison, but they still haven't delivered yet. Maybe they forgot about Dre. o_O

Stock (2.50" dia) =
TRD (2.75" dia) = Aggressive but still not loud (cat-back)
NYTOP (3.00" dia) = Stealth sound, but looks boss and ground clearance galore (axle-back)

The short is far from short, but it's for anyone who is like me and really gets into my hobbies and researches the hell out of everything I can:

Dealer selling me my car wants $4086 to for TRD exhaust. That includes tax & installation.

If the exhaust is $2270 or about $2450 after tax, sounds like an install quote of $1636.

Curious if you think sounds fair?

Also won’t roll into loan so wanting cash to do it…
Not a good deal. Dealer's price is quite overpriced.

Sounds like you left it on all this time, so you prefer it vs stock or NYTOP? And did I read that you suspect the TRD exhaust lost power? Or you think it’s a fluke/ bad run?

It's personal preference. I like the louder and deeper tone of the TRD, but like the look of the NYTOP more. It's difficult to convey in a video. You just have to hear it in real life. That's why we emphasized the objective decibel values between the two. Stock is boring, which some people prefer. To each their own.

Regarding the HP "loss" on the dyno - lowering backpressure would certainly free up horsepower in real world conditions. We weren't able to get any clean runs after the first one. Typically, you would turn off the traction control and all other driving assist features and the ECU wouldn't care, but there was still something still trying to limit the timing because we kept getting wheel speed errors. It was gradually putting itself into limp mode. We also tried various combinations of locking the diffs with no luck. For some cars, like the older Skyline GTRs, you can just pull a fuse and it allows you to dyno as a RWD drivetrain. Please let me know if someone figures out how to bypass the tricky electronics in order to properly dyno the GX. We spent 3 hours finding out what doesn't work. o_O

@VF Tuner might have some experience in this department. He's crazy busy but maybe he will chime in.

I had the TRD Exhaust on a TRD PRO Taco. It was VERY annoying. With that said, I am interested in the Magnaflow set up for my 550.
LOLOOLOLOLL
Dang. Welp. I'll be sure to share my thoughts when we get our MagnaFlow. Any day now. We've been waiting a hot minute.

I got an estimate to have the Magnaflow kit installed by Tandem Offroad here in Fort Worth. They want less than $400 for the install. Now I just need to here from some more 550 owners who have already done it.

35 % Sale going on for OEM Lexus parts…… anyone interested this might be a good time to pull the trigger.

Can the stock center pipe be re-used? i just want the purchase
Catback Performance Exhaust Part # PTR03-60242
and was wondering if it is a direct bolt on to the existing stock centerpipe?

It is bolt-on so I don't anticipate any troubles installing it myself in my driveway. I have a motorcycle jack with a big platform I can use to lift it into place. Not including digging out my tools, I bet I can do this job in less than an hour, but I will keep you posted.
Were you able to install, can the catback exhaust be bolted on to the stock center pipe? trying not to buy the $1100 piece of pipe!!

My install and impressions are above in post #41.

The "center pipe" is the one that actually has the muffler on it, which is going to give you the better sound and flow (although its debatable if the engine can actually use that extra flow). The part that Lexus refers to as the "exhaust" has the resonator on it, which cancels out unwanted sounds like droning and buzzing. These parts are designed to work in unison.

Could you do it? Yes, probably. Will you get shitty results? Yes, probably. You can buy the exhaust alone to try it out, with the expectation that you will be adding the center pipe at a later time.
