GX550 Aftermarket Wheel & Tire Thread (7 Viewers)

Forgot to mention my GX is a 2024. Interesting about the 2025 with the Goodyear Wrangler Territory's ... it's not a true 35 (34.4") but it is a lot wider (12.4") than the Toyo AT3 35x11.5. Wonder if a narrower tire in a true 35 would work on stock 2025.
Not my car but 285/75/18 on stock ‘25 OT

If you're considering KO3's watch out that tire dealers are giving you the latest version of that tire. A buddy of mine bought a set at a local Discount Tire this week and 3 tires were the newest (2nd) version and one was the original version. Different tread, different design. Manager said not aware there were two versions. They did correct the problem. It appears that some of the older tires are still in the warehouses. Just a heads up.

Anyone with KO3s on stock OT+ wheels can provide feedback on ride quality and noise compared to the AT3s? I know the latter OEM is not the ‘E’ rated version and I’m wanting to go to 285r65 18s and can’t bet clarity from YouTube, Reddit…etc. sources on what to expect. Some people say the K03s are quiet while others say they aren’t. The Toyos seem to also be mixed but slightly better on road vs off.

Thanks for any thoughts or feedback!

Had Toyo OEM's on my OT for only 30 miles before putting on KO3 265/70 18 E on the stock wheels. So no experience on Toyo's but love the KO3s. Have 6,000 miles and two major trips pulling trailer. Did a little off road too. Great tire! Previously went through 3 sets of KO2's on my 4Runner and have found the KO3's to be quieter and smoother on highway vs the KO2's.

FYI, the OEM Toyo Open Country ATlll on GX550s are not the same Open Country ATlll sold at retail. Retail version is a much better tire. I found out by accident and was shocked. Also, if you go the KO3 route make sure to get the most current version of the tire. Crazy as it sounds BFG revised that tire after it was introduced. Tread design different, shoulder different. Some of the first versions are still in tire dealer stocks though not sure what sizes they might be. Local Discount Tire still had some just last week.

Boomer!

In matters of taste there can be no dispute.

At least that’s what my dad used to say.

That said, I hate these. So effing busy.
I agree on the busy - wish they would just make these in standard matte without the shiny accents...

The Reign wheels are much better looking but 2x the price...

I ran KO2s and recent KO3 before selling my 4Runner for 8 years. Quiet on road, great tire, good in snow, off-roading, and long tread life. I’d imagine they would be a solid tire for the GX.

Got my tires and wheels mounted so I can finally contribute to this thread :).
Special thanks to everyone who posted their pics/specs before me...it helped me in figuring out my "ideal" wheel/tire spec

2025 Lux+ on Stock suspension

Volk TE37xt (Shadow Black)
17x8 +20
285/70/17 Toyo Open Country (SL)
Total Weight: ~65LBs vs. ~80lbs for 22" OEM Lux+ wheels

My takeaways:
  • Fitment: No rubbing or trimming and in fact, it looks like I could've gone 285/75 but I've read folks start rubbing at that size (on stock, non-OT suspension)
  • 17" wheel - This wheel barely cleared the front brake calipers so be careful on where the wheel weights are stuck on as there might not be enough tolerance to clear it.
  • Noise/Vibration/Harshness: Definitely hear more "humming" while driving. Hoping it settles a little once the tire get more mileage. slightly more vibration but I feel there's a little less harshness and more "plush-feel" Will need to get more miles on it.
  • Poke: I didn't want "that" much poke but it's ok. I think +30 offset is perfect but it even if Rays made that spec, it would have less "lip" on the TE37xt so I'm happy with the compromise. I also installed the front mud flap to limit the debris it will sling up.
  • Definitely happy about the weight savings.
  • Worth noting since there's a separate thread about this... I got about ~5 full turns on the Rays lug nuts. I measured the stock nuts and it was about 9 full turns so definitely less. I will keep an eye on it and re-tighten every few hundred miles.
