Wow! My Scottsdale shop has been amazing for the 15 yrs. I have been going there. Discounts quality control is usually excellent at all levels, but leadership changes and so does quality, maybe its that time! Or maybe that store manager just sucks.I'll give you just the highlights... cut bead in half when removing OEM tire, (replaced tire), wrong rotation (I now mark my tires), gouged outside of wheel when removing OEMs (repaired wheel), gouged outside of wheel AGAIN at 10k rotation (replaced wheel).. Work done at two different shops. Been using these guys for over 25 years and there has been a serious decline in quality of service the past couple years
How much weight did it take to balance? Ive been hearing these new KO3s are hard to balance and need a lot of weights to get it right.I replaced the stock Toyos with BFG KO3s, stock size. Very happy so far. Avg mpgs down a bit to 16.9. Was at 17.5-18 combined on the Toyos.
I became friends with a Big Tires store manager (the old Big that was near 64th St on Thomas) back in the late 90s when I had a Jeep. My business went with him when he became the manager of Discount Tires on Scottsdale Road & Oak. Then I followed him up to the Discount at Frank Lloyd Wright & the 101. I had a company in the early 2000s and we spent over $50k per year on tires for our fleet exclusively at Discount so my buddy always hooked me up well on price for personal tires. Unfortunately he retired and now I just make sure that I hang around and chat with the guys working on my tires now. I had Discount at FLW & 101 put a 34" spare Toyo under my GX. If you hang out with them then they make the extra effort not to screw it up. They'll actually use torque wrenches, be careful not to damage your wheels, etc. I wouldn't be confident dropping my truck off and picking it back up sight unseen at Discount anymore. I have the Lexus dealer rotate my GX tires with each 5k service visit. When it comes time to buy new tires, I'll probably pay the premium to have the dealer install buy them if needed, and install them.Wow! My Scottsdale shop has been amazing for the 15 yrs. ditto Bill's advice! I have recently received replacement wheels from Discount after a service there. They were good about it, but I'm now known by the techs as the guy who complained. I would rather be on better terms but the damage was not excusable. I do not have a Lexus dealer but I have a shop that I will go to that is more expensive and particular. Those new tires and wheels just have to stay perfect!I wouldn't be confident dropping my truck off and picking it back up sight unseen at Discount anymore. I have the same Earth OT plus, looks great. What about the spare with 285/75/18 and the KO3’s?285/70 will fit in spare loc. You can run a larger tire on the ‘25s bc of the lift. 285/75 here View attachment 14233
Looks like this picture is before I replaced the tiresI was looking to trade my OT due to ride quality, but after some upgrades, 18 x 8.5 Vossens with 35 offset and Falken AT4s stock size , SL load. Also added peak spacer and Ikon control arms. Great ride!
What was the reason for the new upper control arms in respect to ride quality?I was looking to trade my OT due to ride quality, but after some upgrades, 18 x 8.5 Vossens with 35 offset and Falken AT4s stock size , SL load. Also added peak spacer and Ikon control arms. Great ride!
Is the 4500 lbs your typical, ready to tow weight? Or is it more?I have a 2025 OT. Any thoughts on putting a 285/70/R18 (probably KO3's) on the OEM rims and towing a 4500 lb RV Lance travel trailer? Would the narrow rim be of concern for stability?
I went with the 275/70 18 KO3 for a little more margin with the OEM rims, towing an Escape 19 trailer. Really happy with the KO3 tires on and off road.I have a 2025 OT. Thanks for the response. Your GX is nicely leveled. Assuming I stay with the OEM rims, I will consider a different tire size. So what suspension system did you add? I use the Blue Ox for WD and sway control. I towed the trailer for maybe 10 miles. A bit different than towing with the Tundra TRD PRO that I traded in for the GX. It became painfully obvious that the OEM tires are not appropriate for towing. Is the 4500 lbs your typical, ready to tow weight? Or is it more?
I can see that the stated rim width for that tire is 7.5-9.5”. However, I don't think I’d be comfortable doing that. The tire is certainly perfectly capable..but you’ll want to inflate it up to 48, 50 psi to gain the advantage it offers. Not sure I’d be comfortable with that pressure on a 7.5” rim, and the bouncing of the trailer, etc.
But I’m simply not an expert in any way.
On my 2024 OT I started out with the stock suspension, the OE rims, and 275/70R18 Nitto TG G3’s, SL. Granted, the SL wasn’t the perfectly safe choice either. My trailer weighs around 5500 lbs loaded ready to go. The hitch is both WD and anti-sway.
After a few trips I realized I needed a more robust suspension AND a wider track AND stronger tire to gain more lateral (side to side) stability.
So that’s what I did.
I went with an 18x8 rim, with offset +25, and the Toyo AT3 285/70R18 E load. And a new suspension designed for heavier loads, but still extremely comfortable for everyday driving. The newer suspension has also eliminated bucking and excessive bouncing, it is set up to keep me level when towing too.
Between the new suspension, a wider track and stronger wider tires I’ve now got it down pat. I have no lateral instability. I’m using about 50 psi towing, and I’ve been shocked at how well it works past even 70 mph.
If your trailer is lighter, and you’re willing to install air bags in the back you can probably be fine with the stock suspension. However, I’d still advise you to go to a wider track setup with your wheel and tire combo. Use a stronger tire as you intend, and really think about a wider rim.
You’re on the right track, you’re asking the right questions.
Ok..so for sure you know what to do.Thanks for the response. Your GX is nicely leveled. Assuming I stay with the OEM rims, I will consider a different tire size.
