The Oil and Filter Thread

that baby looks hot as fu**, nicee change.
You still run Toyo´s AT3.
I am very skeptical towards this tire, when i had it the first time in 2023 it was horrible, the lexus made this one specially for the GX. Wondering if i should run it in my prado too and give it a second chance.
Thanks! Correction to tire size I miss typed its a 285/70R18. i have had toyo open country at 3 on my F250 lifted on 37's for years and they have always been great. The factory Lexus Toyo was shit.

On march 2023 i bought a set of 265/65R17 116t XL Open country at3 , i know i know those are small , its the stock size of the prado.
i Used them to be totally honest for less than 3k miles. I do not know if my badge was bad or what. But man, the noise, the harshness, the water traction was horrible, i did a drift in my prado on a round about.... Makes me understand that it was rear bias but nothing i had expected and that was in the dry.
so i took them off and sold them ;(. now thats been a few years down the road im guessing they ware working better.
So i will get them

I'm about to do a DIY drain and fill oil change at 2K miles. How much oil do I need to add if I don't change the filter?

(My eyes can't see the oil line on the dipstick because it's too clear, and the napkin trick never works.)

7.4 qts when not changing the filter. Reference: page 557 of the 2025 MY owner's manual, also shown here.

I saw a video From the Motor Oil Geek in youtube, where he showed the process of only changing the oil, and keeping the same oil filter. have you guys done that? or are you changing the Filter too?

Sometimes people do just the oil. I'm talking in general not just Lexus or a GX550. That sometimes is the exception and definitely not the rule.

The argument against changing only the oil is you'll already be under the vehicle to drain the oil so change out the filter. A filter costs $5 to $8, the additional cost and effort should not be a deterrent.

i ask because of this.

I've watched several of his videos, but had not seen this one.

This is the first time I ever heard an expert, like this person, recommend an oil change but no filter change. There are a few factors, special circumstances, involved. He is doing oil changes in way less (time or mileage) than what the specs (in the owner's manual) say. And he is doing the changes in the initial engine break in period. So it's fine, he is doing way better than the specs.

Note that he is not recommending doing this on the usual every 10k miles/1 year cycle.

I'm not 100% convinced on the idea used oil filters perform better then new, I may read up some on that point. So, I will continue to do filter changes with each oil change. I am like him, and you, I am in the initial break in period.

Also consider, I am a sample of one.

Today I am at 1300kms on the odo. I will do as I did in my Lc150 Prado. First oil was at 1k, then at 3 k , then at 7k and then at 10k. after that, it became a regular 5,000 kilometer oil change.

First oil and filter change today @ 1500 miles. Took 7.2 quarts, looks like that same amount was drained based on refilling bottles with old oil for disposal. Ran it, checked it after resting awhile on level ground & bottom bead is definitely covered along with a little oil beyond it but not to second bead (this dipstick seems difficult to read or I’m aging) might add a little more tomorrow, oil pressure gauge looks ok right around the middle

So I’m a big fan of sucking the oil out via the dipstick. Have done this for years on other cars and even compared by removing plug and can get everything sucked out. Here’s my question, I can remove oil filter from top pretty easily. Has anyone actually done this? Does it make an absolute mess below? Want to avoid removing the skid plate. Thanks

I've looked from the top, but there's no way I could get my hands and wrists in near the filter.

Yes, you'd get a mess of drained oil below. There's an oblong-shaped funnel (Toyota-Lexus names it a "receiver") mounted directly below the filter. Unless you can get an absorbent rag, like Pig Mat, below the filter and/or into the throat of the funnel you'll get spillage onto anything below. At 5:42 in the video in post #1 in this thread the funnel is shown from below.

I changed my oil yesterday and it was rather easy. I first drove it onto ramps under the front wheels and used a impact driver and a 10mm socket to quickly remove the front skid plate. I previously installed a Fumoto oil drain valve which, if you plan to change your own oil, is worth the money. A 3/8" hose slipped onto the valve bung allows the oil to cleanly drain into the waste oil pan. Another 5/8" hose can also be slipped onto the oil filter funnel to drain the filter drips to the pan. Easy peasy.

I changed mine on flat ground no elevation & while the skid plate was still easy to remove without removing the plastic in front it was slightly trickier to unhook from the front plastic piece due to lesser clearance when unhinging it. I think next time I’ll elevate the front slightly.
