Time to say Goodbye GX550 Lux+ (2 Viewers)

I've heard great things about the Armada, but I don't want anything bigger than the GX for one, and two I want resale value. Unfortunatley the value of the Nissan will drop like a rock regardless of how nice it may be.
I agree on the depreciation, it’s a legitimate concern. However, I usually keep my cars 10 or more years. I drove my 2007 Tundra for 14 years. I’m almost 70 so this car could very well be the last vehicle I buy. I kinda look at the depreciation like this: I hope get out the door on a new 2026 Pro4X for $75 or $76k (no extended warranty). The GX will be about $85k out the door (no extended warranty). So 10 years down the road if the GX is worth 10 or 12k more than the Pro 4X, it’s really not an issue as I paid 10k less going in.

You should check out the QX80. I think they look great and the dealer in my area is offering steep discounts.

I looked at a few reviews on YouTube for the QX80’s and while it did have a few nice upgrades, the majority of reviewers said skip the QX and save the $15 or $20k difference in cost. However, I did plan to stop in and at least take a look at one.

Richmond dealer is taking almost $16K off right from the start.

Never have I seen a good car company do so much bad to ruin their own quality reputation…

& Nissan owners pay the price in resale.

New buyers aren’t getting $10k to $12k off, Nissan is having to adjust their vehicle price down to the vehicle’s true market value, a situation they create over & over.

Speaks volumes for Toyota/Lexus.

I have not been following this Nissan QC saga for the past 10 or 15 years as we have been driving Toyota/Lexus vehicles. I have just recently (30 days) considered a Nissan vehicle. I did see some stuff in the news about 6 years ago that involved the previous Nissan CEO Carlos Gohsn that involved some financial mischief. I also heard he escaped from a Japanese prison and fled to Beirut where he remains today.

GR8Santini, I would greatly appreciate it if you could fill me in on the mistakes Nissan has made over the past 10 years so that I can make a more informed decision before purchasing a Nissan vehicle.

One of the biggest mistakes they made was going after the sub-prime market several years ago. That combined with stale products led to poor profitability and sales. Add reliability issues (mainly with CVT’s) and you have a company that has fallen well below where they once were.

As an enthusiast I see Nissan in the news for the wrong reasons. They have major quality concerns - especially over a decade of failing CVT transmissions, oil issues in 4cyl engines, interior quality - all seeming to be from cost cutting in chasing profit. They’re in a spiral having to deeply incentivize their product line. To be fair they have had great designs, styling & engineering, but lately in EV mode. They announced or already discontinued - Titan & Titan XD, all V8s, Maxima, Altima, Versa, Quest, Cube, Juke, 370Z & GTR. About to bring Xterra back, possibly as hybrid.
Hope they make it, but doesn’t look good.

Of course. My father ran a Datsun/Nissan dealership in the ‘80’s so I have a soft spot for Nissan (and I still own one). I think they’ve got some good cars and their pipeline looks promising so I’m hopeful.

Since my post on 3/17 I have thrown in the towel on my GX. This is a great car for people who don't mind the stiff ride and hard seats. I know it is very popular and appeals to many different folks, but it was not the car for me. A year ago I paid MSRP of $74,523 and waited 4 months. Today I traded it in and got $80,300 plus it saved me another $5700 in sales tax. Only had 4600 miles, but to get this much on a trade above MSRP is unheard of, thank you Lexus.

This forum has been very helpful during my GX ownership and I hope most of your are enjoying your ride. BTW I live in Eastern Tennessee.

Best of luck to all of you!

Just want to say thank you for the kind words to this forum, happy to hear the trade worked out well!
I was able to fix the stiff ride on my GX last year (yes..at extra cost..) and I’m comfortably happy with my seats whether on fast, long day interstate trips or bouncing around 4x4 trails with the tires deflated to reasonable levels.

Best wishes to you. And remember it’s just a car, everything is good, just be happy. 😊

I’m assuming you swapped the shock for something else? In what scenario did it improve specifically ?

Sorry to hear you had to move on from your new GX, but glad to hear you got a killer deal on your trade in. Was the ride on your GX the only reason you decided to move on from it? If not, would you mind sharing your other concerns?

The quality of the ride was the biggest factor, however, the transmission was a close second. I had the TSB flash done on the tranny which helped the rough 1st to 2nd shifts and 2nd to 1st shifts but did not totally cure the problem (maybe 65%-70% better). The tranny always seems to be looking for the right gear and is not as smooth as I would expect from a Lexus. It also shifts hard in the morning before warming up. In addition to the tyranny I had the backup camera updated and the brakes fixed so they didn't squeal backing out of the garage. Another factor was we have a GX460 which provides a much more luxurious ride, is more quiet (no wind noise), and shifts as smooth as glass. As has been said elsewhere in this thread it appears Lexus is catering to a different crowd than the folks that are looking for an old school Lexus luxury ride. I do want to mention that the dealership has bent over backwards to address the issues and has never questioned or denied any of my concerns. Other than the LX600, which I don't feel is even close to being worth that kind of money, Lexus appears to be moving away from the luxury car market which they have always been known for producing.

I agree with you on all but the wind noise. To be fair, given the brick shape of the GX550, one should expect some wind noise.

Hello Earth!
Basically yes - I went to an aftermarket suspension lift kit, and also upgraded to better tires. You can read about it here, scroll down and you’ll see a short list of my goals and why I feel I reached them. Thanks for asking.

Thanks for sharing your concerns rapture ready. If Lexus wanted to move away from luxury on the GX and target the more rugged outdoor sector so be it. However, the Lexus badge has always come with the expectation of a high level of quality and service. For the most part they have always delivered on that expectation.

Given the issues that have been discussed in this thread as well as online, it has become quite apparent to me that the GX 550 may have been rushed a bit through the final testing process. That hood flutter issue should have been caught early on in road trials. Yes, all new designs are going to have a few wrinkles for the 1st couple model years. Hopefully Lexus will get the majority of them ironed out for the 2027 model year.

Appears Lexus is making conscious effort to move away from luxo-barges mindset they launched w/ in 1989. LS styling was atrocious, & early SC models looked like 2 door convertible Buicks.

Lexus is transitioning. Current F-type trims w/ firmer suspensions on sedans & SUVs seem targeted to younger & enthusiast buyers. Remember the heresy of the GX460 moving to the razor grill? Or the noise LFA made showing up being just a dream that Corvette will never be - super performance WITH Luxury.

I think GX550 is a move for them. LX keeps the softer touch, but GX is new ground for them… far from perfect, but darn nice vehicle & really in a segment by itself, as Infiniti & Acura have nothing to counter. You can find better, but Ineos, Hummer, MB all come w/ stronger price. I’m guessing this is the new Lexus folks.
