Negotiations and the Lexus Extended Warranty (1 Viewer)

Don't forget about the other little parts such as the transmission, the transfer case, and the front & rear differentials.

Running total

  • Full dealer menu pricing (synthetic oil) to 75 k mi.: ≈ $3 780
  • Lexus provides complimentary factory‑scheduled maintenance for the first 5 K and 10 K visits on new vehiclesLexus.
If you used those free visits, your out‑of‑pocket total drops to about $3 410.

What these numbers include — and what they don’t

  • The dealer menu already covers routine inspections, tire rotations, engine‑oil & filter changes, air‑ and cabin‑filter replacement, brake‑fluid flushes (every 30 K), key‑fob battery, wiper inserts, and fuel‑system cleaners.
  • Not included (because Lexus lists them “as needed”) are drivetrain fluids (front/rear differentials & transfer case) and spark‑plug replacement. Many owners have those items done around 30 K–60 K mi. at an added $250–$600 if done at the dealer, or less if an independent shop performs the work.

Adding a single diff/transfer‑case service ($400) and a set of spark plugs ($350) would bring the grand total to roughly $4 500–$4 700.

Those prices are great, they are much lower than what 2 dealers out here in Arizona estimated I asked them last year (they didn't yet have pricing set up for all of these services).

I had my oil changed at my free 10k service, then I had the oil changed again at my 15k service. I paid $181.85 out of pocket for just the oil portion of the 15k service. I don't know what the rest of the service would have cost because I have the prepaid maintenance plan. I'll ask them at my next service which is coming up very soon at 20k. The extra services at 15k included lube prop shafts, smart key battery, rotate tires, plus full inspection.

For my upcoming 20k service, I'll obviously be doing an oil change and I'll be talking to them about when I should be changing fluid in the differentials, transfer case, and transmission. They checked my differential fluid at 15k and it still looked new.

I am on the service plan for "driving off-road, on dirt roads or on dusty roads" and although I don't tow, I do frequently carry heavy loads so I am conscious of those special service items as well. For the "towing a trailer, using a car-top carrier or heavy vehicle loading" the first recommended differential oil change is at 15k. For the off-road service schedule, the first recommended transfer case oil change is at 30k.

I'm looking through the service schedule and the only mention of transmission that I see is "inspect transmission fluid cooler hoses and connections and transmission for signs of leakage" at 30k and then the first "replace transmission fluid" is at 60k on the towing/heavy vehicle loading schedule (then again at 120k). I don't see any recommendation to change the transmission fluid unless you're observing the towing/heavy vehicle loading schedule!

Surprisingly, the dealership I got mine from didn't offer any prepaid maintenance plans. I was ready to spend on it. But I was buying out of state.

There are four dealerships within an hour of where I am. Will take it to two of them for the included 5,000 and 10,000 mile stuff and ask them.

Just to follow up on my last post on this thread, I had my 20k service last week and the dealer said to wait until 30k to do the diffs and transfer case. He said that they check the fluid at every 5k-interval service and they'd call me if the fluid was low or looked dark or looked like it had an issue. My 20K included an oil change and the service was free but I'll be paying out-of-pocket for an oil change at my 25k service.

why are you paying out of pocket for the oil change at 25k miles?

Does the prepaid maint not cover the oil changes every 5k miles?

Or it it because you are averaging more than 2 services / year?

Correct me if I am wrong but I believe ppm follows whatever says on your vehicle routine maintenance or checks intervals (like for gx550 its every 5k or 6mo whichever comes first) and oil changes are only every 10k point or 12mo. Lexus/toyota doesn't do 5k oil change intervals as part of their maintenance schedule. But you have the option to pay out of pocket if you want, just a peace of mind and better for your engine if planning to keep it long term.

Something I’ve always wondered is why Lexus/Toyota sticks with the 10k oil change interval when so many of us still feel more comfortable with 5k. It seems like they’re confident the engine can handle it, but I can’t help thinking about long-term ownership and resale. Curious if anyone’s actually seen issues pop up from just following the factory 10k schedule

correct - pre-paid maintenance only covers the manufacturer's recommended interval which is 10k miles. I want 5k oil changes.

For me I cannot get my head around hte fact that synthetic oil will ACTUALLY go longer to 10,000 miles. So, like so many of you I cahnge it at 5k regardless of what they say. Sure, I’ll spend a little more, but will also keep it 7+ years.

LOL

Jerry is the man! He has hooked a lot of us up with low-priced Lexus Premium Warranties. I originally paid my dealer $4405 for my 7 year / 100,000 mile extended warranty (that's 3 years and 50,000 miles added to the original 4 year and 50,000 mile warranty). I thought that was a pretty good deal. Then a friend of mine gave me Jerry's info. That friend has a Tundra and he found Jerry on the internet. That friend has since bought a GX550 for his wife and he, of course, went through Jerry. Anyway, I reached out to Jerry and he sold me the exact same 7/100k warranty for $2605. I got a refund from my original dealer for the $4405 I had paid them.

Question? Jerry is at a Midwest Toyota dealership but sells Lexus warranties?
I have seen a few other post about this but it sounds to good to be true. Using a credit card who is the payment too and how do you get the warranty? Would hate to pay "Jerry" and when it comes time to use the warranties Lexus says they are not valid.

Jerry is very much The Man! He has hooked quite a few of us up. He works at a Toyota dealership but there is a lot of crossover between Toyota and Lexus for obvious reasons.

Like everyone else, I did the transaction remotely, over the phone and computer (email).

Let me dig up my emailed "receipt"...

I received full copies of my actual credit card receipt and also all the warranty info from Lexus (warranty booklet and all details). My local Arizona dealership had all this info on file when I went in for my first service.

Hey all,

New to the forums, just posted in the intro page - and glad to be here. My new Premium + should be arriving within the next couple of weeks. As I'm graduating from some reliable Toyota V8's (2008 4runner, 2012 Tundra), and we typically keep our cars for a long time, I am contemplating the Lexus Platinum extended warranty. Seems to make sense to put down around $2700 "insurance" for a complicated car that I would keep for 7 years or more. I have read through the warranty thread in this forum and gotten info from Reddit - all great info.

I do have a specific question that I don't think has been answered anywhere: Is it possible to figure out the dealer cost for various extended warranty packages. What's a fair profit margin to give them? $200? $500?

I figure my sales rep spent 20 minutes on my pre-sale - I called him, we discussed the available models set for delivery, I picked one, he sent me a link, and sent him the deposit. As per usual these days, they got MSRP with no negotiations - easiest job ever for him! Haha. Anyhow, I am hoping to work some negotiations into the warranty package. I would be glad to give them something over cost. If no, I can ask them to match some prices that people have posted from the famous "Jerry" and go from there. I don't NEED the GX right now, so I do have the ability to walk if I don't feel that the dealer can't give a little.

Here are some prices I pulled from a Reddit thread - do these seem like good deals, or could we do better?

7 YEAR 100,000 MILES $2,605.00
7 YEARS 125,000 MILES $3,410.00
8 YEARS 100,000 MILES $3,015.00

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!
I went all in on every dealer option for maintenance and warranty.

I’m not normally that guy but the numbers looked great to me and I found all of it well within reasonable.

I’m sure I helped someone make their quotas but I also think I’ll get my money’s worth.
