VF Tuner ECU/TCU Tuning for the GX550

I am on my third full tank of gas since I installed the VF Tuner tune. My general observations from watching the instant mpg average gauge is that my mileage seems to have improved after installing the tune.

I just updated my spreadsheet. My mpg average after installing the Westcott lift and 35" tires was 14.50 mpg over a total of 13,172 miles driven. My mpg average after installing the tune is 15.40 mpg, albeit over only 1,072 miles. I'll keep tracking it as the post-tune miles wrack up.

One thing I have definitely noticed is that my higher-speed highway mileage has improved without a doubt. I can now set the cruise control at about 75 and watch the instant mpg average gauge slowly creep UP instead of down. Previous to the tune, any cruise control set above mid-60s resulted in the mpg average ticking down. Also note that 75 mpg indicated for me is a tick over 80 mpg actual due to the bigger tires. This could be the biggest benefit of the tune - I can run with traffic at 75 mph and actually see a mileage increase after adding more power!

I did a 200+ trip Friday - Saturday to and back from Lake Havasu City. I couldn't believe my eyes as I had adaptive cruise set at about 76 (in normal mode) for the 100-mile slog across the desert on the I-10 and the mpg average crept up into the 16s. I've only seen that once before. Temp was 100 in Phoenix and 105 in Havasu so AC is running non-stop with the auto temp set at 69 or 70. Two adult men in the truck and a few hundred pounds of gear.

Friday late afternoon I filled up the tank and I was at 16.56 mpg (an all time high). I reset the mpg average gauge on every fill up and I immediately drove about 10 highway miles to a desert wash, drove an hour or so in deep sandy and gravelly desert washes, camped for the night, and drove out in the morning. My indicated average was a horrible 8.0 mpg Saturday morning when I hit the pavement for the drive home. Then the 200 mile cruise home got me up to almost 14 mpg from 8.0 mpg!
Hi , did the tune fix your shifting woes?

has anyone from australia successfully had their ECU flashed? i am struggling to have the VF tuner read the ECU from the CAN connect cable / read directly from the OBD.

Not from Australia but I have flashed mine. You cannot read or flash the ECU via the OBD II port. Doesn't matter where in the world you are.

It can only be flashed via the CAN connect cable that has to be connected to the port behind the dashboard. This guide shows how to do it: https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0885/5830/files/CAN_CONNECT_Cable_for_the_GX550.pdf?v=1743524640

The wiring loom in Australia is different from the US which means with CAN connect cable I can't even read the ECU. Hence asking if anyone from Australia specifically.

Gas mileage update post 93 octane tune. Today I drove a total of 244.2 miles with 230 of it being highway driving with cruise control set to 76 mph.

It was just me in the car on the way to a supplier to pick up inventory but on the way back I was carrying 900 lbs in trunk. I filled up before and then filled up again when I returned. It took 11.81 gallons of fuel to refill the tank which works out to a combined 20.68 mpg. Would have likely been an mpg or 2 better without the extra 900 lbs on the return trip.

Overall very happy given that the GX is about as aerodynamic as 2 bricks.

Hi , did the tune fix your shifting woes?
I had the dealer flash my transmission computer a while before I installed the VF tune. I've noticed a few clunky shifts back down to 1st but not nearly what it was before the dealer re-flashed or re-booted or re-set or whatever they did. The tune hasn't seemed to affect the old shifting issue at all.

I only ask because I had the VF tune variant on my Tacoma which fixed the shifting issues with that drivetrain … was hoping it cleaned it up on this platform

Alright I got the CAN connected. Sent my ECU read to VF, they need 48-72 hours to support it and send me the tune files.

Is it smart to run the 91 tune for a time before moving to 93, to not stress the engine right out of the gate?

How does switching between eco and sport mode work now, same deal?

Still all works the same. Just more power and better shifting.

Hello everyone,
I will be out of office from the 26-29th, however we still have someone available for email support. We are doing some stress testing on some parts out in the desert for this engine.
Stay tuned.

Oh lord. No. Don't use pliers. You'll want a small tip long screwdriver to depress the locking tab. It will slide apart pretty easily then if you take that approach.
There was no way I could hold onto the end plug without using pliars. And I couldn't find any slot that could be depressed to release the end plug. Information that should included in the instructions. I even emailed them for assistance and got nothing back.

You hold the plug in place using a trim removal tool that slides between the plug and the white clip. You'd then use the flat head screw driver to depress the locking tab. It will then slide apart.

These are the tools.

Thanks! I was able to finally get it off. Connected the CAN cable and connected it to my laptop. Then it got dark, so I'll finish it tomorrow. But after I unplugged everything. I got a Check Engine Light and System Malfunction. I'm going to assume I'm going to be able clear those codes?

Yes. You can clear the codes using the Diagnostic tool in the VF Tuner software.

Sorry in advance if my question seems silly……….

As an Alaskan, we only have 90 octane as the highest available at the pumps, and then have oxygenated blend for the winter months as well. Does this mean the only option is the 87 Tune, or would the 91 Tune work and just self regulate?

Thread has been a great read, thank you to @VF Tuner and to all who have contributed!

The 91 octane tune would be OK in this case but the 93 octane will not be.

I am surprised Alaska has a lower octane option at the pump than we do up here in colorado..
