2024 GX Engine Recall? (5 Viewers)

Tundra engine failures are very real. But, is there any hard data regarding the number of actual GX550 engine failures that have occurred due to the debris/bearing issue? I've seen some "friend of a friend" spun his bearing stuff, but I'm still on the fence whether this recall is from an abundance of caution from Lexus or real failures in the field.

I bet you will be ok. As I said earlier, I'm going to not worry about it until and if it happens to affect me. If someone wants to find things to stir them up, there is no problem finding it on the internet. The challenge for me is to find some balance. Arthur C. Clarke many years ago presciently said "Getting information from the internet is like getting a glass of water from the Niagara Falls." The trick is that you have to be careful doing it :).
Correct, I am holding off on doing anything and will see what their Fix is in Jan of 2026. I would think engine replacement but will see can't assume but based on the past that is what they did for the tundra's. I am just finding it hard that after 8 years with this engine and a few years of having engine debris from 2023 I believe you would think they would have gotten this figured out already. I found that a part might of changed in 04/24 and hoping that is why they gave that date and wrong about it being every engine out there. I was shopping around for some 22 inch rims and a lift for it but am holding off I guess to see. Love the truck just concerned sort of. I know Lexus Toyota will make it right hopefully..

My wife’s GX 550 is affected by the recall. I purposely did not buy a tundra and bought a ram power wagon to avoid the recall. Then I bought my wife her GX 550. Whoops.
Well, I hate it, but I ditched the GX 550 last night. Was just curious what trade value was on a Lux plus with 20,000 miles. We’ve had it for 13 months. Was able to get 83K for it. Traded it in for a 2026X5. Vastly different vehicle of course. I will miss the incognito Lux plus GX 550. It was an awesome vehicle for a year. My wife just never loved it. I did. But it was her car. Definitely an off-road bad ass even in Lux plus shape. It was fun last winter in the snow. The sunroof just had too much road noise and the cabin wasn’t as luxurious as she liked. The X5 definitely does drive better. Good luck to all. I still love that vehicle. But for as in demand as they are, I was able to save surprisingly quite a bit of money going with the X5.

what was your MSRP on your GX?

not bad, 4k for 13months of driving.
The demand of the GX 550 certainly helped. That and the fact that X5 have been out for a while and BMW, lots are stocked full of them and ready to deal. Good luck to all. I certainly enjoyed the year. Thought it would be a lot longer ownership. Even with some of the things I didn’t like about. It would’ve really never considered moving on from it until the engine recall. Hope everyone here has a pain-free experience.

Mine was held at the port with 04/24 (04/16/2024) build date but no engine recall..

There might not be anything to it, but a friend has a GX550 with a 3/24 build date (7xxx vin range) that was also held at port for weeks for a quality check. As of now, there’s a backup camera recall but nothing for the engine.

There was speculation that the port hold could’ve been engine related but at the time, there was more talk about sunroof drains. The timing of the hold definitely lines up with the bearing part number update.

We’ll see I guess….

If it was built in March 2024, it wouldn’t have a 7000 range VIN. The Australian recall press release pretty much shows the cars built in a one month period (3/4/24 to 4/3/24), and that time frame went from VIN 1315 to 4321. So 7000 wouldn’t have come probably until late April or May and would be outside the scope of this recall.

You’re right…. 3/22/24 was production confirmation. It wasn’t built until 4/25.

WOW, lot more involved than i thought. I would never want my GX that's practically new to go through that process.

That's actually the best way to do it - in the factory they attach the drivetrain to the frame before the body goes on. The potential for damage would be much greater if they tried to pull the engine with the body on.

My Tundra had the frame replacement 15 years ago and it's been totally fine since. The cab's only held on by 6 bolts so not as involved as you'd think

3/24 Build date with the recall, and not losing any sleep over it... Unless my GX blows up on a road trip between now and the new engine I don't see how this affects me beyond 2-3 days in a loaner, some goodwill from Lexus if I ever need it, and a brand new engine with extended warranty. The people on here talking about "broken clips" make me rethink forums in general. I'm still less recalls and issues than my 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit. Would be more worried if the engine issue was known and Lexus said they were only replacing engines that blow up!

Whatever makes you happy. Personally, I rather not deal with the headache even after the engine replacement.

I think I'll get more headaches from reading a 10 page thread of people asking if their 9/24 build is affected than what I am going to go through. I'm going to drive it like a rental until I get a new engine.

Be like Abarbs30.

Any deep dive into an engine, or replacing an engine, is a major surgery. But they know what they are doing. Worrying about broken plastic clips on the bumper fascia is actually pretty ridiculous. Do you think a stork delivered your baby GX to the dealership?

I was ringing it out, manually shifting in Sport+ mode the other day, thinking of how few f*cks I give as this engine (that probably has a 99+% chance of being perfectly fine) will be replaced by the dealer at some point in the future.

I received brand new front brakes at 10k miles.

I’m kind of hoping that something goes awry with a few transmissions and/or transfer cases so I can get those renewed too.
