2024 GX Engine Recall? (2 Viewers)

Not sure where the information about May or June builds came in (would have likely been from a misinformed representative?). Everything that has been shown thus far by people with inside info has said early build GXs only (through “early April 2024”).

Now the official report is available via NHTSA, and it shows the recall covers GX builds through 4/10/2024. So if you say yours was built 4/18/2024, then that is why yours isn’t a part of this recall. Since the previous Tundra/LX recall implied the issue was fixed before GX main production began, and now has been extended to include this range (and even re-recall cars thought to be fixed) there’s no guarantee yours will never be recalled. It just isn’t a part of this one.

So basically, the link says that more vehicles may be recalled.

"This recall covers V35A engines, including service parts, of a particular configuration, manufactured during a certain period at certain production plants and used in the vehicles produced as listed above. The same engines, including some service parts, produced prior to this period were recalled under 24V381. Some of the same engines produced after this period were produced with improved manufacturing processes and remain under investigation"

So based on this it seems like engines made after this period and up to when an improvement in the main bearing was implemented remain under investigation. I didn't see a mention of when the improved bearing was implemented.

I found something somewhere that says the Car Car Nut guy mentioned the bearing PN was updated in April of 2024, which would correspond to this new recall where engines up to new bearing being implemented are being recalled. The wording about others remaining under investigation appears to be because this recall only covers Tundra engines made through February, not April like the LX and GX which would correspond with the updated bearing design.

Question - I would assume that engines are made in a different factory and shipped to the Lexus GX assembly plant so is the build date on the car, the same date as the engine build date. Might they not be months apart in reality?

Based on the recall sheet they are recalling 3800 GX's made between May 31 and April 10. So in a period of 11 days that's 345 GX's a day out of Tahara, in addition to the other Toyota and Lexus models rolling out of the plant that don't use the V35.. I doubt they are storing 10's of thousands of engines somewhere that could lead to months between manufacture and production, especially in these days of just in time production. I could see having a few days maybe of inventory on hand but that's about it.

That's not really how Toyota operates. That document states the engines are made at Tahara, which is where the GX is made. Toyota is also famous for 'just in time' manufacturing rather than stockpiling parts.

Thank you SFLGX. So now it would be interesting to know whether anyone with a build date after 04/10/2024 has been recalled?

Agree with the JIT for Toyota mfg. I read somewhere that the engine JIT period for in-country engines (like Tahara) was about 2 weeks max. So, engines will be built and installed in a vehicle very quickly.

The answer would be no. Recalls are tightly controlled by the feds so proper notices and documentation needs to be filed. As of right now nobody with a build date after 4/10 will be included. It could always be expanded later however.

I'm not a mathematician, but I believe there are ~325 days between May 31, 2023 and April 20, 2024, not 11 days. That would make it ~ 12 GXs per day, if that is a reasonable production I have no clue.

Lol good catch. My dislexia just super imposed March 2024 for some reason. 12 a day is way below what they can make, production is closer to 700 at Tahara from a video I watched. I think that has to be a typo though. The GX 550 wasn’t out in May of 2023… the first units were in December 2023:

That's probably the total they make across the GX, Landcruiser 250, and 4Runner

in reading this a couple times, in short, the Tahara Plant decided that the main bearing(s) were possibly problematic and not "robust" enough and after April 2024 the GX engines will have a newer/improved engine bearing(s) to fix this issue. The report seems to indicate that their newly implemented cleaning process (after the earlier recall) was adequate at Tahara. At the Alabama plant for Tundra engines they did not immediately switch to the new bearings and did enhanced cleaning for a time period until they got the new engine components, and engines built during that interim period will be "under investigation" to see how the engines perform.

So the only date I see on the black door jam sticker is 5/24 in the uppermost right corner. I see some post a full date like 4/15/24. Is this 5/24 my build date?

You usually know that specific date of build through your salesperson. They're able to see it in their tracking system.

One thing is not clear to me but maybe someone here can help clear up. Were all engines built after 04/10/24 built with both the new cleaning process and the more robust bearing? Could there still be engines, such as mine build 04/18/24 built with the new cleaning process but not the new bearing? I read somewhere that the new bearings were not in the build process until 05/2024
