2024 GX Engine Recall? (2 Viewers)

I received my recall letter Dec 15th. It didn’t have a remedy yet. They were just informing me ours was on the hit list. Messages my service guy and he said a remedy letter should be coming next and that is when we can schedule it to come back for the engine swap. Good times.
BB73,
On your drivers door jamb what is the assembly, build date of your GX?
TIA,

DJ

Just got a GX550 delivered to me two weeks ago. Seem to avoid the latest recall but the fact that Toyota says a remedy is still planned is troubling. I don't think they actually know what the root cause is so far. The metal shavings story just does not add up. Only affects mains and not rods? I bet it's a quality control issue with the bearing supplier or assembly issues. Smells like a lot of bullshi* up till now. WIll change the oil at 500 miles then every 5K. Not sure I want to change to 5W-30 just yet.

BTW - I managed to get a Honda Odyssey to 320K miles but I did change to 5-30 at about the 200K mile level. I could hear a faint knock that went away with the 5-30 oil. Made me a believer for anything with looser tolerances.

You should read the NTSHA Defect Information Reports from both recalls. It provides timelines and details of Toyota’s investigations and actions. It does seem to me that Toyota doesn’t know the root cause(s) of the failures yet, so they are going down the process of elimination: first, machining debris, then improved bearings, etc.

It would be beyond stupid for Toyota to be replacing engines without knowing what the issue is and being sure that replacement are trouble free. Changing engines with those same defective units is like setting money on fire. Even worse because it would piss off the consumers and tarnish their reputation completely.

The replacements aren’t trouble-free. There’s been at least one report of the replacement engine failing in the Tundra:

This video has already been discussed. This is not a report. It's a FB post that says nothing about the reason for the car being on the tow truck. It could be main bearing failure, or it could be 1000s other things.

good afternoon..I'm curious if the update really fix the transmission issue?
I would suggest avoiding the transmission reflash for now, unless it really bothers you. There's very hit-or-miss success with that reflash based on feedback in this forum. Mine was possibly reduced, but not eliminated.

Instead, I suggest lubricating your driveshaft zerks. Reflash or not - that seems like the most consistent way to quiet and sometimes even eliminate the first gear downshift clunk for now.

any idea of the 2026 MY trucks are affected by this? Just bought a new one. My old 24 didnt have the recall message.

Yea. My 2024 didn’t have the recall message in my app. Luckily. But I am trading that in for a 2026. Which is why I’m inquiring about the 26. Thanks.
There isn’t any indication yet that even the 2025s are out of the woodwork yet. It’s a waiting game.

Tundras are apparently still popping engines, even with 2026s. I believe they only recalled engines until the 2024 model year like the GX.

Yes. But have they found attribution yet? I recall reading that it was “machining debris” for the earlier cases. But how could they not have fixed “machining debris” after 2 years?? It must be something else. Or they are conflating all of these engine issues and some are just regular tolerance failures and operator error/induced.

Who knew buying a 75k car from the supposed most reliable car manufacturer would result in this mess. If they haven’t fixed the problem then what is recall fix gonna do???

I’d get out of this car if there was another I liked better. The only other car I was considering was the grand highlander with the a25a engine as that’s the most reliable engine Toyota/lexus makes these days. Might consider downgrading if this fiasco doesn't get resolved soon.

I agree. It's frustrating and as I watch my odometer tick up on the GX, I feel like I'm sitting on a time bomb. It's not comforting that they said they had it figured out, no issues with the GX, and now I'm waiting on an engine replacement letter. However, I'm in the same boat - I don't have something out there I would replace it with. I use it to tow my 5500 pound airstream (it does great BTW), but there's not another mid-size SUV that combines off-road capability with that towing capacity. (I don't need a lot of off-road capability, but I do get into messy stuff from time to time and the OT+ handles it pretty well).

There’s nothing out there that I would replace it with that combines the looks, performance ,features, and price. That’s why I replaced my 24 with a 26. I was just hoping for some behind the scene quality of life improvements, and to be honest the engine recall doesn’t worry me as much for the chance of it happening and having a repaired versus the potential resale value.

Machine debris was the initial released cause but it’s more than likely a design issue of this engine as it seems to still be occurring. It’s remains to be seen what we end up seeing for the upcoming MY for this engine but it doesn’t sounds like it’s been entirely resolved.

I ended up buying an extended warranty myself for peace of mind.

I can’t imagine that Lexus would make you pay out of pocket if it’s a known “defect” regardless if you have a warranty or not. That’s a PR nightmare waiting to happen. As if they haven’t gone through enough already.

Regardless whether this engine pops or not on me, I want to be protected in case there are issues down the road. This engine is complicated, like most turbo set ups are. There are also enough electronics in this car to make NASA jealous.

Toyota hasn’t covered all engines in their recalls. Some of the recalled engines appear to be failing. I plan on driving this thing past standard a warranty.
