2024 GX Engine Recall? (14 Viewers)

How much are they giving for trade in?
Yesterday I got a quote for $76,500 for my Nov.24 build date OT+ 6,700 miles. This would be for a trade or purchase back outright. The salesman had no idea about the recall… I asked my service man and he knew about it and said he thinks it wouldn’t be expanded to other dates… But who knows

that sounds pretty good.

I have decided to trade in my gx550 to a TX350. I love the GX550 but i dont want to go through the headache in the future.
I mean, put this into perspective, majority of the affected vehicles, regardless their models, are fine. There are people racking hundreds of thousands miles without issue. I would treat this recall as a "extended warranty" so you just run as long as you can and then you can get a new engine.

I have the recall message as well with a March 2024 build date. Between the 3 TSBs that my car has already needed and two recall notices, neither of which are available to be fixed yet, I am contemplating getting rid of this thing but don't have anything else I really want at the moment. I bought a Lexus for reliability and easy ownership after driving back to back German cars and at 18 months and 7k miles this has already had more issues, or potential issues, than my 7-year 40k mile turbo Porsche.

My question is, can i drive this GX without replacing the engine if i dont have any issues right now. How long can I wait it out before getting the engine replacement? For example, can I drive the GX until it gives me a problem in the future and decide to swap out the engine under the recall? or Can I drive till 250k without any problems and decide to swap out the engine?

Or Can Lexus deny my factory warranty on the engine since Im refusing to replace the engine under the safety recall?

Hey there, I don't think the issue is whether or not Lexus will honor your warranty, but rather will the state of Maryland allow you to renew your registration with an open recall.

Hmmmm, I'm a March 2024 build date and I'm not on the recall list.

I actaully hope that I do end up on the recall list. I'm perfectly fine with a new engine to replace the 21,000 mile engine I have right now. I'm in this to drive it to death, not to worry over resale value.

In the meantime I'm going to carry on as normal. If the engine dies then I'm certainly covered.

I was going to keep it but my dealer is offering 78k for my overtrail, too good to refuse. 4k off on the New 2026 tX350 Premium,

I will probably trade in the TX for a GX in the future when the recall is resolved and when there are plenty of supply GX so I can get a good deal.

For those impacted with the engine recall, would you opt to replace engine asap once there is a remedy or continue to drive as some have suggested and deal with the engine swap then? First time dealing with such a recall. Thanks in advance all!

Putting aside any immediate safety concerns (engine grenades on busy highway), I would wait at least as long as I found comfort that the replacement engine is not just the same likely-to-grenade again engine. Note that Tundra replacement engines have failed yet again according to the internet.

Glad I passed on my opportunities to buy. Was hoping for some changes and improvements with the 26MY and when announced it would be a carry over, followed by the recall on the 2024's... yea no thanks. I'd rather wait and see a couple more years of data on these before plopping down $90k. It's great that they are offering a completely new engine for those affected but I would not want to deal with the aftermath of that. I'm not convinced a Lexus tech is going to reassemble all of those body panels, clips, and screws as tight as when it first rolls off the assembly line. Plus taking it in the shorts on resale when "engine replacement" shows up in the vehicle service history.

Best of luck to those having to deal with this. Hopefully it's just the 24's but I'm skeptical.

The conspiracy theorist in me thinks that Toyota is going through the process of elimination to identify the cause(s) of these engines spinning the #1 main bearing.

And the first thing to eliminate and/or correct is machining debris. To that note- a recent YouTube video indicates that Toyota did not resolve the machine debris issue until November 2024; it seems they may have found other sources of machining debris.

The next thing to eliminate and/or correct is bearing material. I believe they have made at least one change in bearing part numbers, but was it enough?

The next thing to eliminate and/or correct is oil flow and ensuring bearings are getting adequate lubrication. One solution is to go to a thicker viscosity, xW-30 or xW-40 to get lubrication in the hydrodynamic range on the Stribeck curve.

I think this is reasonably plausible.

Since we’re on our 2nd known go at this..it might very well indicate that the faulty cleaning process / software programming of various rinse times, temps, fluids, repeats, for different mated parts could have existed at other suppliers or tiers of machining for those parts that do mate up.

If the entire mess ends up including either out of spec and insufficiently QA’d raw material as received, or outright improperly engineered, designated raw material to actually use…then we have a much worse problem.

the other theory is that GX were NOT included in the original recall due to being built in a different plant Japan and not in the USA. Well that theroy has been debunked.
