GX550 Overtrail Vibration

Ive been to my dealers about 7 times. Ive had three separate sets of wheels and tires, so thats definitely not it. I went in for the lean, but they said it was within spec. It vibrates at mostly highway speeds and rattles like crazy over bumps.I have been working with a Lexus rep thru corporate who has been handling my ticket. Every time they come back and say “this is a normal driving characteristic of this vehicle”. Dealer isn't to keen on working with me. I have a Gladiator on 37’s and it drives smoother than this thing. So maybe I am 1,000% wrong, and this is just how its suppose to ride. Its my first luxury vehicle and its just hard to believe this is the “normal” ride quality. I have zero experience with the EKDSS, but something tells me that may be the culprit, because nothing else makes sense.

Have you had them check the drive shaft balance? Replaced the rotors?

Wow man. So f*cked

I have had the TSB done which replaced the front rotors/pads, definitely stopped the screeching sound. I have not asked them to check the drive shaft. You would think after the fifth time I brought it in they would try something else other than the tires, but again my dealer just kind of blows me off and reverts back to Lexus corporate in saying that it’s a normal characteristic. They even wanted to try and charge me for a road force balance when the truck is still under warranty..lol

Haven’t posted in a while bc the dealer bought my GX Lux + back because they couldn’t fix the suspension chattering after 3 weeks in the shop. That was in May and I’ve been loving my 2024 Sequoia ever since. Wife ended up convincing me to buy her a 2024 Land Cruiser yesterday and I made sure to do a test drive before signing the papers. I can tell you that the Land Cruiser is absolutely as smooth as butter compared to my POS GX 550. The vibration some owners are feeling is not in any way shape or form part of the intended driving characteristics of the vehicle. Being able to drive the LC has 100% convinced me of that. Currently have 75 miles on the LC now and love it. My point: don’t accept any dealer claims that that stiff/shaky/chattery ride isn’t a legit problem that Lexus needs to fix. View attachment 5325
We own both a Land Cruiser FE (11k miles) and an Overtrail (6K miles) and thankfully neither has a vibration issue. I am no mechanic but I can’t understand why some % of these cars experience this problem. Would think it would be universal if it is either a design or manufacturing problem.

I think they all probably ride the same but people interpret the quality different. Makes no sense otherwise

There are people in this thread who claimed to have traded in their vibrating 550 and gotten a LC that drives smooth as butter. There are also people who claim to have had varios parts replaced and the vibration stopped, and more recently there are people who claim that the vibration went away after the vehicle “broke in”.

All the above claims would indicate different experiences for the same driver after something was done to it, which would indicate there is some vibration in a small % of units.

Mine has been smooth as butter since day one

Lots of spinning things that can cause problems on an individual level.

Rotors
Wheels
Tires
Drive shafts
Flywheel
Engine mounts
Even the crankshaft lol

Lots of things to think about. Specific rpm? Specific speed? Independent of road quality? Suspension setting normal vs soft vs sport changing the quality of it? Difference of vibration in the front seats vs the back? Does it happen under braking?

So there's still nobody who's driven one with the vibration and one without back to back? How can we make this happen?
I have! My issue is still ongoing. I have driven my car with the tyres from a Luxury on it, which still vibrates and drove the Lux with my OT tyres on it. Lux drove smoothly so it is not the tyres/wheels. I have driven my OT and their dealers demo OT back to back and theirs is smooth. Multiple people from the dealership have been in my car and acknowledged that the vibration is there. My car has been in 6-7 times now with no fix. I have owned 2 Toyota LC Prado’s and have driven many Landcrusiers with different tyres (AT & MT) for over 20 years, this is not a “feel” or a “too high expectation“ thing that some people have posted previously. The work Toyota Hilux, unloaded, handles bumps better and smoother than my GX550. I sold my 2018 LC Prado (VX) with 130,000 km on the clock to buy the GX550, I am regretting it as the Prado was a far better ride than my GX!

I believe there are 2 issues in my GX. Firstly there is a vibration that is rotational and related to the drive train.
Here is why…
1. Vibration frequency increases with speed
2. Not gear box. Frequency doesn’t change with gear changes
3. Off throttle, coasting, going down hill is worse than on power
4. You can start to feel it from about 20-30kph
5. Peak amplitude is in the 70-80kph range
6. After that speed, the vibration frequency speeds up but the amplitude diminishes
7. Not tyres/wheels. As discussed above.

As for my second issue, I believe there is also an issue with my AVS. The dealer’s OT definitely rides better than mine. In Comfort mode, their OT rocks around, floats over bumps but mine handles completely differently. Mine hits little bumps in the road and you feel it through the entire car. There is a street on the way to my kids school, up hill, very bumpy. My OT actually breaks traction in the wet heading up it, the dealers OT is perfect. Mine in the dry feels like axle tramp!

Over the years, I have purchased 2 x LC Prado’s, Hilux, Kluger, 2 x RAV4’s and 3 Corolla’s. This was my first Lexus, so far the experience has been far from Luxury.

Thanks for sharing. Once again this confirms that it’s literally a roll of the dice for anyone buying the OT trim. Still keeping my fingers when I get mine. C’mon Lexus, figure this out!!

What are next steps for you? Has a Lexus corporate specialist been handling your case? Amy discussions about Lexus buying the car back from you?

Picked up my Luxury+ on Monday afternoon. Signed off on paperwork without a test drive. I immediately thought something was wrong when pulling out of the lot. Felt all kinds of weird vibrations and chattering (even at low speeds). Figured I was just used to being spoiled in my last two Defenders and that I'd get used to the stiffness and the 22 inch tires. Boy was I wrong. Had three other friends drive it and they all agreed something is wrong. Got a deal to trade it in for a Sequoia at another dealership, but decided to see if there was an actual issue that could be fixed. The dealer agreed the car wasn't behaving as it should and they test drove the other Luxury+ they have on the lot. They said the other one was actually worse than mine. They think it's probably something with the wheels and tires, but they are doing more research. In the meantime, I have a base TX as a loaner for the weekend and can tell you it rides 1,000,000 times nicer than my GX. If they can't fix it, I won't keep it.
What was the resolution? I have this now with my luxury plus. I have just over 100 miles on it and it’s been doing it since the second I drove it off a lot. I bought aftermarket winter tires and rims directly from the dealership. Don’t know if that’s the problem.

They asked me to come back next week and drop it off.

They want to look at it again. The issue is that dealerships can’t just keep changing parts until it is fixed, that costs $$$. Every bit they replace needs to be approved by Lexus/Toyota Au so the dealership doesn’t wear the cost. The dealership has been great, I get a loan car and they really want to fix it but my patience is running out. I also have the front brake squeal which is yet to be fixed, plus a rattle in the driver’s door, which rattles with the vibration!

Holy sh*t dude. Lemon law that thing

Holy sh*t dude. Lemon law that thing
We don’t have “Lemon Law” in Australia. We have the Consumer Guarantee but it comes down to the interpretation of “major fault” and “reasonable time”. If they can’t fix it the next time they take it, I will be asking for a replacement vehicle.
