First Oil Change at 5k instead of 10k (1 Viewer)

I paid my dealer to do oil changes at 1000 miles and at 5000 miles and will do them every 5000 miles from this point forward. The dealer will do my next oil change at 10,000 miles at no additional charge per the maintenance agreement.

I just choose to take this more conservative approach to oil change intervals as a relatively inexpensive insurance policy against premature engine wear.
I plan on using the same schedule when we take delivery of my wife's 2026 GX 550. I have an F-150 running a 3.5 Eco boost that gets the 5,000 mile service interval. They are great engines, just a bit high strung, and require some extra attention.

I could believe the assembled fit for the bearings may have been modified slightly. As I understand it they have electronic measurement systems and choices of bearing fits (+/- tenths of thousands or equiv. mm). All modern manufactures have this ability to account for tolerances in the machining process. A slightly looser tolerance may be advantageous in this motor especially if it's seeing high loading.

For me, I say NEVER go over 5,000 miles on any oil change. They give you a 60,000 mile powertrain warranty. The Feds want fewer oil changes to fight global warming, etc. They asked the engineers "if we change the oil every 10,000 miles, will this engine last through the standard powertrain warranty?" and the engineers all said "Sure, no problem" so they went with that... Ask those same engineers if the engine will last 100,000 or 150,000 miles with 10,000 mile oil changes and they will say "Nope"... It's up to you, but if you plan to keep this as a forever vehicle, 5,000 is a small price to pay for longevity...

Exactly. Oil and filter are cheap, DIY oil changes are therapeutic, and peace of mind is priceless.

I just scheduled our 5000k service and I also asked for an oil change. Its $115 at my dealer, which I know I can have it done at Valvoline for like $70-75 but I don't want those hacks working on the vehicle. I am a DIYer on maintenance items such as brakes but doing my own oil changes is something I have avoided for years. Since the vehicle goes in every 5000k anyway, i figured i might as well have them do it for piece of mind if something isn't done right.

I promise the oil change is like 5x easier than any brake job I've ever done. You don't even have to jack up the GX - it's one (17mm I think?) drain bolt and the oil filter, which requires a $5 socket from your local parts store.

Just don't overtighten the drain bolt - one good snug is fine.

Also, $115 is cheap for a Lexus Dealer oil change! I think my local dealer charges around $200.

Good to know. I have ramps, jack/jack stands, oil catch can (mainly for my tractor) but its a PITA for me to get it all out and set up and then usually you need to remove a skid plate and undershielding to get to the drain or filter. My Infiniti sedan requires them to be removed. If its that simple and you can slide underneath, than I might look into doing it myself.

You do have to remove at least one skid plate, but on non-OT models, it's four m12 bolts and two m10s, I think. Again - all accessible (if sometimes a bit awkward) without jacking up the car.

I was able to change out my oil by not having to jack up the car. I drove it up on 2x4 that I had in the garage, and it gave me enough clearance to reach the last 2 10mm bolts for the skid plate. The plate itself isn't that heavy.

I would recommend getting a drain hose for right under the filter. I had some oil leak out after unscrewing the filter.

I keep procrastinating buying a hose. I just held a shop towel underneath the drain, lol. Probably should go measure it & buy one.

Don't forget that the "Tech" doing Oil Changes at the Lexus dealer is the absolute lowest dollar per hour person they have on staff (most likely anyway)...

My neighbor just purchased a new jeep cherokee a few months before my GX arrived. Last week he told me he had a lot of oil leaking out of it after getting an oil change at his dealer.

Surprise surprise, they didn't tighten something back up enough or didn't check to make sure the old oil filter seal was removed. He said there wasn't any oil on his dip stick and they told him to drive it back in so they could check it out and top off the oil. I would have lost my mind if they told me that.

Another reason I do everything I can myself.

2026 OT here.
On march 24 , it had the first oil change done at 1100kms.
It was by order of Lexus here in Panama.
Next Oil change will be in 6 months or at 10,000 kms.
I`m Planning to do the next oil change at 2,500 kms , then at 5,000kms, then at 7,500 kms and then at 10,000 kms. that the Plan , maybe in practice it wont happen like that.
